AtomAnimation

 


That right there is a screenshot from AtomAnimation, a website that seems to do nothing more than provide animations of Bohr models for any element with any combination of protons, neutrons, and electrons.

It's kind of fun to play around with, though I warn you that the larger atoms take a decent amount of time to render and seemed to slow my browser down a bit while they were running.

World's Roundest Object!



Be careful when discussing this video with your students. This is about the world's roundest sphere...sphere. It's not a ball. It's a sphere.

Just saying.

'Cause I know I've said ball in front of my high school students, and it took me a while to get the boys' attention back.

(In a related aside, my wife is listening in as this video plays. She lost control at 6:22 when the narrator said "Newtons, Joules". To quote her: "heh, heh...Newton's jewels...heh, heh".)

This 'world's roundest object' is more about the basis of our metric (now the systemé international d'unités or SI) than it is about materials science. There are, however, some serious challenges involved in making a material that won't decompose, that won't get dirty, that won't wear away, that won't change over time.

Here they have created - according to the scientist at 7:25 - a single crystal of silicon with 'no voids or dislocations' and containing only one isotope of silicon, making the material just slightly less valuable than absolutely, perfectly, priceless.

Complete History of the Avogadro Number

Around 0:50 into the video, our meandering narrator mentions that he wasn't able to find a single source with correct, complete information on the history of the Avogadro Number...which makes me wish he'd provided sources for his information. Otherwise, how do we know that what he's telling us is correct?

(As an aside, I've always called it Avogadro's Number. Maybe the the and lack of possessive is a British thing. I'll admit that I don't remember how my professors at the University of Aberdeen referred to it.)

I will say that this is an amazingly thorough and likely correct history of the development of the concept and number of the moles. It goes through from Democritus through the Karlsruhe Congress and all the way to the modern measurement of Avogadro's number via a nearly perfect sphere of silicon.

I need to watch this video a few more times until I'm more familiar with all the steps in this development so I can tell the story to my students.

Solar System Model

 

Rollover joke - The Earth is, on average, located in the habitable zone, but at any given time it has a certain probability of being outside it, which is why life exists on Earth but is mortal. (Source - XKCD)

See, it's funny because most of the time, the atom - particularly the Bohr model of the atom - is likened to the solar system with electrons following 'orbital' paths around the nucleus the way that planets follow similar paths around the sun.

As a chemistry teacher, I can say that it's much, much harder to come up with a similarly easily understood analogy for how electrons exist in the quantum mechanical model of the atom. There just isn't any sort of macroscopic thing that is anything like the quantum mechanical model of the atom.

And if the planets did move like electrons, that would be somewhat terrifying - especially as electrons can teleport from region to region a la an electron in a box.

Though I do have some evidence that the planets have a measurable spin, so there is that, at least.

Models of the Atom


Rollover Text: J.J. Thompson won a Nobel Prize for his work in electricity in gases, but was unfairly passed over for his "An atom is plum pudding, and plum pudding is MADE of atoms! Duuuuude." theory.

See, it's funny because some of those are actual models of the atom...

  • 1810 - John Dalton's first experimental atomic model
  • 1904 - JJ Thomson's addition of the electron
  • 1911 - Ernest Rutherford's nuclear model
  • 1913 - Neils Bohr added in energy levels
  • 1932 - James Chadwick clarifies the nucleus with neutrons and protons
  • Today - quantum mechanical model
...and some totally aren't, but I wish they were...
  • 1907 - as far as I and explainxkcd.com can tell, this one's totally made up 
  • 1928 - nunchuck model - how awesome would that be?
  • 2008 - fivethirtyeight.com is a website that looks at the world through a statistical lens, most famously at the US national elections

Solomon the Unwise


See, it's funny because when King Solomon is known for his decision when two women came to him both claiming to be the mother of the same baby. Solomon suggested that the baby be cut in half with each woman getting half the baby. One mother thought this a fair decision, and the other woman begged for the child not to be cut in half. She was willing to relinquish her claim rather than let the baby die. Solomon then announced that the woman relinquishing her claim must be the real mother because she cared more for the baby's life than for her claim.

In the case of the comic, the two women both claim that be the owners of the atom. King Solomon apparently proposed the splitting of the atom.

Nuclear fission - splitting the atom - releases a massive amount of energy, hence the mushroom cloud.

I'm Atoms (Scientific Cover of Jason Mraz's I'm Yours)



I'm not a fan of Mr A-Z. I'll admit that right off the bat. He just seems too much like a parody of every fraternity guy who learns how to play the guitar just well enough.

With that being said I do actually enjoy "I'm Yours". It's a catchy song and eminently tuneful. It's a nice little earworm.

This version isn't nearly as tuneful or catchy, but it's far more scientifically accurate, and it lets me continue to be impressed with Derek Muller.

My favorite chemistry quote

Any visible lump of matter - even the merest speck - contains more atoms than there are stars in our galaxy. When we lift an apple we feel the total weight of a colossal number of almost weightless atoms. I love that quote. Love it more than any other quote I have ever heard about chemistry.

The simple notion that everything we are...everything we see...everything we can ever touch, see, hear, taste, or feel is made up of dots of nothing so miniscule as to almost not exist singly...that the combined might of these imperceptible bits of nothingness can crush, deafen, poison, blind, or stun you with their beauty and grandeur...is amazing to me.

And I won't ever be able to say it more eloquently than did Atkin in Molecules (Though I am partial to the original volume, the one I have on the shelves in my classroom.
